Journal Entry #8

Tuesday, April 7, 2026

A lovely day in Fort Worth today. Not too hot, a little overcast, making it perfect weather to do some work outdoors. I believe the bugs were enjoying it too because I got a large bug bite, but as my mom would say, “if that’s the worst thing that happens today, it was a pretty good day”. 

We got so much more work done on the privet. It looked like we were trying to deforest the place by the end of the day. It really stunned me when I looked around at the end because I thought back to what it looked like when we started. The whole entire place had been covered and now it was it huge piles (an example pictured below). It truly makes me reflect on how one person does not think they can do much on their own, which likely yes, it would have taken one person a much longer time to do this, but as a group we can do so much more good, or damage, than on our own. It makes me think back to the Before the Flood documentary we watch. Thinking even just about red meat consumption, it felt like one person’s red meat consumption really could not make that big of a difference. But, if you added all of our efforts combined, it could do a lot to help. 

The last thought I have today was how I could not help but notice the planes going over us for quite some time while we were working. They were incredibly loud. It made me think about the animals living in the nature center, and how much that must frighten them. If I heard that and had no clue what it was, I think I would assume the world was ending. Granted, they likely get used to it, but still, I imagine it does some damage to their health.

Tuesday, Jan 13, 2026 For my nature walk after class, I decided to go on my walk along the Trinity River. Growing up in the Seattle area, I enjoy being around water. While the Trinity does not quite compare to Lake Washington or the Puget Sound, I find it familiar and comforting. During my walk, I noticed ducks floating in the water, the strong winds rustling through the trees, and the clouds parting in just the right way to allow beautiful sun beams to peak through. I do not often think of the clouds as a large element of nature, however on Tuesday, they were the main character of my walk. They seemed moody, almost indecisive whether or not they were going to create a storm or if they would pass and let the sun shine down below. I was enthralled watching them on my walk. To say the least, I thoroughly enjoyed the assignment. In terms of the environment and issues surrounding it, I would say I am opinionated on issues. Journal Entry #3

Saturday, Feb 21, 2026 A reflection on the “Economy” passage. To be honest, I had to work to comprehend what Thoreau was trying to say, and even then, I don’t think I fully understand. I believe part of it is how differently the same English language is spoken nowadays, and another part is that he is talking in sort of metaphors that I do not understand. Additionally, his way of writing is quite interesting. He writes in these short little spurts, not full paragraphs. It made it difficult to follow because his ideas are not concrete sentences and the words he used are no longer used today. One quote that I did cause me to pause and think was “what a man thinks of himself, that is which determines, or rather indicates, his fate”. I agree with Thoreau on this. If you think you are unworthy or unable of accomplishing something, you will never try and therefore never get it. Sunday, Mar 2, 2026 I got the chance to run the Cowtown half marathon yesterday. It was a lot of time outside, unfortunately not very much of it was in true nature or in area with few people, but it was still much better than running in the rec on a treadmill. I ran the half last year as well, and it is one of the coolest opportunities to run around most of the city. You go through the Cultural District, the Stockyards, and through Downtown Fort Worth, all of which I have attached a picture from. After running it, I feel much more connected to the city.  For a brief section, we get to run along the trinity, and that is one thing I wish the half got more of that the full marathon does. It is a very peaceful feeling to run along the water. In class we have discussed how all of us feel much more at peace when we are near some sort of water. Maybe one day I will run the full marathon and get the change to run longer on the trinity river. Or maybe I’ll just go run down there myself inst...
